The phase reviews to be carried out during the project are required as:

An acknowledgment of the baselines defined in the Project Plan. It is their task to find out
- if products have to be revised and if they have to be handed in later because they are either not correct or even missing,
- if the following activities have been properly planned.

A decision about the necessity to realize requirements controlling, in case architectural considerations (e. g. the selection of off-the-shelf products) make checking of User Requirements advisable.

A decision about the measures to be realized after the completion of the requirements controlling.

A preparation of the generation and approval of decision papers.⁽²⁾ The result is the planning of the next phases.

A check in the case of a delivery to be made, to find out if all requirements have been met.

Phase reviews are management decisions. Should the customer/contractor relationship be concerned, this must be agreed on by contract.

The results of the phase review have to be documented in a Protocol.
