4.1 Overview
While the three submodels Quality Assurance (QA), Project Management (PM) and Configuration Management (CM) describe the accompanying activities in a development project, the development itself is realized in submodel System Development (SD).
The structure of submodel SD is based on activities on two levels, i. e.
- System (Segment) level and
- level of software and hardware units (SW Units/HW Units).
From the point of view of the system development process, these levels help in the early activities to get from abstract descriptions to software and hardware, and in the later activities they help to get from the software and hardware level to the overall System.
The following concepts and explanations have a central meaning for the understanding of the remainder of these regulations:
- At system level, the cooperation of the activities SD1 - System Requirements Analysis and SD2 - System Design is decisive for a successful agreement between user and implementor, so the resulting technical solution from user-level specifications will be a professional one and therefore acceptable.
- Subactivity SD1.7 - Realization of Requirements Controlling is the binding link between the activities SD1 and SD2 ; this enables the assessment of the User Requirements on the one hand, and the System Architecture on the other hand, by taking into consideration feasibility and profitability.
- The product structure of the V-Model defines of which generic items a System to be developed is basically comprised.
- The term System Architecture (in the sense of technical architecture) refers to the actual structural order of the instantiations of the generic items. The technical architecture describes how the System functions in the form of network-like interactions between concrete system elements.
- The component parts of the System Architecture are referred to as elements. They might be Segments or SW Units/HW Units (see section 2.1 Product Structure and Embedding into the Organizational Environment).
- The System Architecture is completely refined in activity SD2 - System Design, up to the SW Unit/HW Unit level .
