    • 1 Characterization of the Interface

    Overview:

    The interface between the basic methods BAR - Bar Plan and NPT - Network Planning Technique corresponds to the type "information transmission in sequential order" and occurs in three different variants:
    1. Application NPT-BAR for the structural analysis
    2. Application BAR-NPT for the time analysis
    3. Application NPT-BAR for the time analysis
    The application of the interface between the two methods NPT and BAR within the scope of the time analysis (items b) and c)) is only realized if method NPT is applied for the detailed planning (cf. footnote 25) in the Methods Standard). Otherwise, both the preliminary and the detailed plan are generated with BAR.

    Individual Descriptions:

    1. Application NPT-BAR for the structural analysis

      Within the scope of the planning activities PM1.5 - Generation of Preliminary Plan and PM4 - Detailed Planning, the planning of the dynamic organization is realized with method NPT (step 1: structural analysis), the following effort, schedule, and resource planning is realized with method BAR.

      The results generated for the activity list within the scope of the structural analysis of the NPT (listing the work packages (allocation of (sub-) activities to (sub-) products) with its logical dependences) are used as a basis for the bar chart.

    2. Application BAR-NPT for the time analysis

      The preliminary planning (PM1.5) with BAR must be converted into a framework for the detailed planning (PM4) with NPT at the beginning of a project (step 2: time analysis).

      During this conversion, the information about individual work packages are used:

      Prior to the further processing of the network plan the (or respectively further) logical dependences of the work packages have to be collected and integrated.

    3. Application NPT-BAR for the time analysis

      The update of the preliminary plan in BAR must be realized within PM 4 on the basis of the detailed plan in NPT if the steering (PM 8) and the corresponding detailed planning (PM 4) with NPT (step 2: time analysis) have resulted in modifications with regard to the estimated efforts and deadlines on the level of the preliminary plan.

      When converting the network plan into a bar chart, the information about the individual work packages are included:

      Prior to the conversion it is necessary either to combine the work packages of the network plan in order to achieve the specification level of the bar chart (preliminary plan) or the work packages must be grouped and combined according to the objective of the bar chart after the conversion.

    2 Example

    Figure 4.3 illustrates the interaction of BAR and NPT applications. The individual interfaces a, b, and c listed in the illustration have been described in a more detailed way in the individual descriptions.

    3 Tool Support

    For the interfaces between BAR and NPT within the scope of the time analysis (b and c) a corresponding tool support must be requested since the costs for manual processing are not justified. If such a tool is not utilized in the project, only the BAR chart (or else a networked bar chart) ought to be applied right from the start.
