| 4.14 Elementary Method "Earned Value Technique" (EVT) |
4.14 Elementarmethode "Earned Value Verfahren" (EVV)
1 Identification/Definition of the Method
2 Brief Characteristic of the Method
The Earned Value Technique (EVT) graphically represents a comparison between the planned and the actual state of the schedule and cost situation with regard to the work progress in the projects. It integrates methods for the performance control with methods for the cost and schedule control.
Means of Representation
In the EVT diagram, three different project curves are compared:
Operational Sequence
Project states are defined by specifying work packages with their planned values of time and costs or efforts. The planned project curve is documented in a diagram. If the corresponding project state or project progress is achieved with the completion of a work package then the actual diagram curve is updated; value and performance deviations (referred to the cost situation) as well as time deviations can then be detected and have to be closely investigated and described.
3 Limits of the Methods Application
4 Specification of the Methods Allocation
| No. | Activity | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 4.1 | PM8 - Project Control |
After completing a subactivity, method EVT is applied for the planned/actual-state monitoring within the scope of the project control. The planned and actual data are used to generate the value, the performance, and the time deviations at the level of the detailed or preliminary planning.
The result is recorded in the report documents, therefore it is not possible to say that the product is covered. Activity PM8 - Project Control is completely covered by the additional use of methods TRDA - Trend Analysis and BAR - Bar Plan or NPT - Network Planning Technique which make it possible to get information about the planned/actual state from different aspects. In this connection EVT represents a comparison of the actual state of the project and the planned performance in view of all costs and schedule. |
| 4.2 | CM4.7 - Recording Project History | The Earned Value Diagrams generated in PM8 - Project Control have to be summarized and the values must be cumulated so it is possible to get an overview of the planned/actual project state. For larger projects, separate diagrams are advisable for the different milestones or subprojects. The subproduct Project History.Deviations from the Plan is covered by applying EVT. |
