T.1 Reasons and Objectives

The V-Model as the basis for the technical handling of a project is characterized by its general applicability. It does not depend on the application scope. However, this general applicability requires that not all of the rules it contains are relevant for every project. This is illustrated by the example in the following schema:

Therefore, in order to make the V-model applicable for a concrete project it is necessary to decide:

Which activities are required for the realization of the project?
Which products must be generated within the scope of the project handling?

The connected deletion of activities and products that are not relevant is referred to as Tailoring. It is the main intention of tailoring to guarantee that in every project the actual costs and efforts serve the project goals. The following problems should be avoided:

too much paperwork,
senseless documents, but also
the absence of important documents!

This is achieved by the reduction of the generally valid (generic) regulations of the V-Model to the regulations required for objective reasons. Apart from the description of the project, its organization and its objectives, the resulting subset of the V-Model (Project Manual.project-specific V-model) is the primary part of the Project Manual.

V-Model can be considered as a check list containing large numbers of proven and practical regulations. For each individual project, a subset is selected from these regulations. Therefore, the V-Model can be seen as a "tool box" from which modules (activities/products) that are suitable for the project are taken by the tailoring.
