The IEEE 1220 standard defines the requirements for an enterprise's total technical effort related to development of consumer products (including computers and software) and processes that will provide life cycle support. It prescribes an integrated technical approach to engineering a system and requires the application and management of the systems engineering process througout a typical product life cycle. This standard defines the disciplined systems engineering process that is to be applied and managed during a systems engineering effort. This process is applied recursively to the development or incremental improvement of a consumer product to satisfy market requirement and to simultaneously provide related life cycle processes for product development, manufacturing, test, distribution, support, training, and disposal.
IEEE has a special Software Engineering Standards Subscription which provides the on-line access to the IEEE standards collection.
