The BOOTSTRAP Project developed a formal methodology for assessing and improving the way organisations develop software, the purpose being to provide a reliable and consistent benchmark for assessing what practices and processes are in place, what areas should be considered in order to achieve the goals of the company or organisation and to define a set of actions and initiatives which if undertaken by the software development organisations would improve software quality, reliability, development costs and productivity.

BOOTSTRAP Methodology covers two key areas:

The Assessment which provides an in-depth critical study detailing the capability of each major aspect of software development environment.

An Action Plan for step-by-step evolution to improve both the organization and the process.

The Process Model

During the BOOTSTRAP project, the overall maturity levels of many software organizations were measured and the results indicated that there was a broad scope for improvement. These opportunities for improvement motivated the establishment of the BOOTSTRAP Institute to manage the assessment method and to help deliver the benefits of process improvement.
